A tragic incident occurred in Ocala, Florida, when a mother of four was killed by a gunshot through a door at a neighbor’s house.
The victim, Ajike Owens, had gone to the house to confront the neighbor about an altercation involving their children.
According to the Marion County Sheriff’s Office, the neighbor had thrown a pair of skates at Owens’ children, who were playing in a nearby field, and allegedly used racial slurs against them.
Owens knocked on the door of the neighbor’s apartment, and an argument ensued. The neighbor then fired a shot through the door, hitting Owens in the chest. She was taken to a hospital, where she later died.
The sheriff’s office has not arrested or identified the shooter, pending an investigation into possible self-defense claims under Florida’s “stand your ground” law.
The sheriff said that there had been a long-standing feud between the two women over the children’s playing habits, and that deputies had responded to several complaints in the past.
Civil rights attorney Benjamin Crump is representing Owens’ family and demanding justice for her death.
