An Italian court has sentenced a Swiss billionaire to 18 years in prison for his responsibility in the deaths of more than 3,000 people exposed to asbestos.

Stephan Schmidheiny, former owner of the Eternit company, was found guilty of aggravated manslaughter for causing an environmental and health disaster.

The judge also ordered the compensation of more than 100 million euros to the victims and their families. Schmidheiny has always denied the allegations and has appealed the sentence.
