A fierce international backlash was faced by lawmakers in Uganda after President Yoweri Museveni imposed a tough new anti-LGBTQ law that includes the death penalty.

The Anti-Homosexuality Act, which President Joe Biden described as a “tragic infringement of universal human rights,” imposes the death penalty for “habitual offenders” and individuals who transmit infections like HIV through same-sex relations.

It also imposes a 20-year prison sentence for “advocating” homosexuality.
