A married couple’s alleged killer faced court on Monday after their bodies were discovered at their Newhaven home.

Josh Bashford, 33, and Chloe Bashford, 30, were found dead on Friday night in Lewes Road.

Derek Martin, 64, of Moulsecoomb Way, Brighton, was charged with their murders and appeared at Brighton Magistrates Court.

He only confirmed his name and date of birth and was remanded in custody until his next court appearance.

Police said Mr Martin was known to the couple.

The couple’s relatives have shared their grief and memories on social media.

Georgie Last, their niece, posted on Facebook that they were “a hilarious and caring duo… the best parents to four wonderful, smart, and loving kids”.

Simon Glenn, another family member, wrote on Facebook: “I can’t believe it, it doesn’t make sense. My little sister Chloe was taken from us too soon, she was so kind and gentle.”

Stephen Glenn wrote: “You left us too soon, with four lovely kids to raise.

“You were our youngest sister, and we will always miss you and keep you in our hearts and prayers RIP.”

A spokesman for Sussex Police said they will conduct autopsies in the following week to determine how they died.
