Selena Gomez is back with a new song that reflects on her past relationship with The Weekend. The pop star released “Single Soon” on Friday, a catchy and emotional track that explores the feelings of moving on after a breakup.
The song is the first single from her upcoming album, which is expected to come out later this year. She has made tremendous hit songs such as “Lose You To Love Me” and “Bad Liar”.
In an interview with Zane Lowe on Apple Music, Gomez said that the song was inspired by her own experience of ending a long-term relationship and finding herself again. She said that she wanted to share her story with her fans and help them heal from their own heartbreaks.
“I think it’s important to be honest and vulnerable in your music, because that’s what connects with people,” she said. “I’ve been through a lot in the past few years, and I’ve learned a lot about myself and what I want in life. This song is about letting go of someone who wasn’t right for you, and embracing your independence and your worth.”
Gomez also revealed that the song title was a nod to her ex-boyfriend, The Weekend, whose real name is Abel Tesfaye. The couple dated for 10 months in 2017, but split up due to their busy schedules. Gomez said that she still has respect and love for him, but that they were not compatible in the long run.
“The title is kind of ironic, because I’m not really single soon, I’m single now,” she joked. “But I wanted to play with the idea of how he always has these cool and mysterious titles for his songs, like ‘Blinding Lights’ or ‘Save Your Tears’. So I thought, why not do something similar, but with a twist?”
The song has received positive reviews from critics and fans alike, who praised Gomez’s vocals, lyrics and production. Many also noted how the song showcases her growth as an artist and as a person.
“Single Soon” is a powerful and empowering anthem that celebrates Selena Gomez’s resilience and confidence,” wrote Billboard. “She proves that she can turn her pain into art, and inspire others to do the same.”
Gomez said that she hopes that the song will resonate with anyone who has gone through a breakup, and encourage them to look forward to the future.
“I want people to know that they are not alone, and that they can get through anything,” she said. “I want them to feel hopeful and optimistic, because there’s so much more to life than a relationship. There’s so much more to you than who you date.”
